Our Young People at Heart team were at the Gloucester Pride event today, recruiting foster carers from the LGBTQ+ community.
Our special edition Rainbow Pride bug attracted a lot of interest and hundreds have found new homes!
Gary Cox, Founder of Young People at Heart, said the needs of foster children were varied. Because of this, diversity among foster carers was important.
Gary gave an example of a male child placed into the foster home of a male couple. Because he felt safe, the young man disclosed to his foster carers about the sexual abuse he had been subjected to by his birth mother. He did this because he felt safe in the environment he was placed into. As a result of his disclosure, the young man received counselling about how to deal with his trauma. Gary said he hoped more people from the LGBTQ+ community, single and couples, will apply to become foster carers.
