Megan’s visit to The Houses of Parliament and House of Lords

Here at Young People at Heart, we love nothing more than to hear about some of the many, fantastic opportunities, our children and young people are so lucky, to experience.

One of our young people Megan, was so excited to share with us that she had been on a visit with school to London, to The Houses of Parliament and House of Lords. Megan’s school encourage their children to join the pupil parliament group. In these group sessions, they talk about various topics and issues, about the school day and discuss new ideas to make playtimes more fun, lunches more exciting and interesting and engaging after school activity clubs.

Megan isn’t yet part of the pupil parliament group however, she has shown a great interest, in joining them next academic year. This was recognised by Megan’s Headteacher and as there was a spare place available on the trip, Megan was offered the chance to go on the visit.

On arrival in London, their first stop was The Houses of Parliament and House of Lords. Megan, and her friends were given a very detailed and interactive, guided tour. The tour guide explained what happens, on days when the MPs are in house. They were shown a brief video to watch and were even able to have a mini debate, in the parliament seats. They saw the Speaker’s chair and Megan enjoyed hearing about the history, of the green chairs and curtains in The House of Commons. Megan said her favourite part of the whole day was ‘seeing all of the gold everywhere, as it was sparkly.’

Although the day was very long, with an early start on the coach to London, Megan thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Megan shared with us that she is so excited to join the pupil parliament in September, as the trip to the Houses of Parliament has taught her lots about being a pupil voice and how to listen to other people’s thoughts. Who knows we might have a future MP amongst us!!
